What exactly does it mean to have privacy?

Is privacy over rated?

Does privacy clash with the freedom of expression? Should I be free to express anything I want, it would be inevitable that one of those things I choose to express would fall within someone’s privacy sphere. For example, if I slept with a girl at a party, then would my right to tell everyone about it be stronger than her right to want to keep it secret? Then, the question would be would I get my freedom of expression or would the other person’s privacy prevail?

Should there be a winner, then we can say that society favours 1 over the other. But does society favour freedom of expression over the right to privacy or the other way around? The answer that some are proposing would be proportionality. Whether the right to privacy outweigh my freedom of expression.

What approach should the law take?

Should aspects of privacy that have an economic interest be treated differently? Should celebrities who court publicity then be protected by an invasion of privacy? It is after all in their line of work to court and seek publicity. Then someone bite the hand that feeds them, who is at fault? Should celebrities be granted the same protection as the common man in the street?

These are just some of the questions I have to answer for my paper. And I believe it is sufficiently thought provoking to let all you people know about it. So read it, think about it or just do nothing at all. I don’t quite care.
